The virus ?

Viruses come in many forms and are given many different types of names. The different names are an attempt to group similar types together.

The different groups of viruses give a clue as to what they do and how you can spot them on your system.

Common symptoms are the general slowing of the computer, sometimes even freezing it. Other types issue various error messages or display adverts in pop-up windows.

Some messages may even be copies of genuine system messages. The more malicious types will delete files and basically try to destroy as much of your system as possible.

These problems can be stopped using off-the-shelf software that provides a 'Firewall' and virus protection. Basically a firewall stops (almost) everything.

However, you need to open doorways in your wall to allow programs to access the internet for email etc. The virus protection picks up the viruses that slip through.

Ok, if you have more than one computer or Laptop in your home, you could probably benefit from

some simple networking, so that you can share files between each machine (you could watch a film

on your laptop that is actually stored on you main PC without it actually taking up valuable hard

drive space on your laptop), share a printer or even use your Playstation 3 to stream movies from your

computer to your TV!

Alternatively, you might be running a business from home and want to keep your business network separate

from from your home network.
